Basketball Camps in New York 2016

The Empire State is considered one of the “Basketball Meccas” of the U.S.

Just by browsing this page you can see how many quality basketball camps and programs are located in New York.

Remember, Basketball training doesn’t stop after summer is over. And it definitely doesn’t end in New York. You may want to consider one of the  year-round basketball training programs below.

The year-round training may be a weekend clinic, a one day a week camp for eight weeks, or personalized training when your son or daughter is available.

Pro Tip: When browsing camps, make sure to write down notes of camps your son or daughter is interested in.

Write down things like camp cost, dates, location, and what makes that camp unique.

The notes will make it much easier for you to narrow down 10 possible summer camps down to 2 or 3!

The Knicks, Nets, or Liberty?

The New York Knicks have a few different camp options for youth players.

The Knicks have partnered with Chase bank to offer free bball clinics across the 5 Boroughs and in New Jersey.

They also have additional Basketball Clinics throughout the year where they will host special events like partnering with the WNBA Liberty and having Knicks players attend.

Pro Tip: Clinics will be shorter than camps by either number of days or amount of time during the day.

The Knicks offer the classic summer basketball camp in eight different sessions around the city. The camp focuses on skill development with a New York Knicks theme!

The New York Liberty basketball camp is located in Tarrytown, a little North of NYC.

The Liberty camp features appearances and training from Liberty players. Campers also will get a t-shirt and a ticket to any regular season game.

The Liberty also offers something I haven’t seen another camp do, but I like it.

Campers have the opportunity to sit in on a practice. If your daughter has ambitions to play in college, this would be a great opportunity to see how the pros practice!

The Brooklyn Nets have partnered with Dribbl to offer basketball camps in the Hamptons. Pro Players like Jarrett Jack, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Chris McCullough will attend the camps.

The Nets camps have sold out in the past. Don’t wait around to sign up!

National & Celebrity Camps in New York

The Nike Basketball Camp dominates as one of the most popular camps in the world.

Nike generally puts on a solid camp and has experienced Camp Directors. The only thing negative I’ve heard about their camp is how crowded it is. Read the parent’s review on my Nike Camp page.

In New York, Nike offers a few different camps. Make sure to read the camp director’s bio to see if he or she has a history teaching young players. Also look into the facility the camp will be held in. Will it comfortably hold the number of campers?

Five Star Basketball Camp dominates the basketball scene in New York. They have over 15 different camps to choose from in greater New York.

In fact, New York is the only state where Five Star has Day Camps.

Wondering what makes the Five-Star camp so special? To start, it’s one of the most well known basketball camps in the world.

And their alumni list is extensive with former campers like Michael Jordan, Chirs Paul, Lebron James and Kevin Durant.

Five-Star leans towards more of an elite camp, but they have camps for players as young as 8 years old.

If you’re looking for a Celebrity camp, look not further than Camp Melo.

No doubt it would be great to meet Melo, especially if your son or daughter is a fan, but it’s literally the most expensive camp I’ve come across online.

It will run you $499 bones to spend one day with Carmelo Anthony.

Couple things to consider if your little one is a huge Melo fan. The camp is limited to 100 players. And it’s going to be an intimate experience with Melo.

Even though the camp is only for one day, your son or daughter will spend more time with Melo than he or she would at any other camp with a Pro Player.

Plus, if you’re a Citi card hold you can save 20% on the camp!

Camps Local to New York

Shootin’ School is located on Staton Island. They teach several basketball skills to young ballers, but focus on shooting fundamentals.

NYC Dribbl Basketball is one of the most popular basketball programs in NYC with 12 different locations and over 20 years of experience training youth players.

Dribbl is a trusted bball organization in greater NYC with over 1,000 families enrolling their son or daughter into their training every year.

They offer basketball camps and training year-round. Choose from a traditional camp with a week of training or one day of training a week for eight weeks.

I mentioned this above, but Dribbl also host the summer camps for the Brooklyn Nets. Pretty cool!

I wanted to mention Teaches Hoops Basketball Camps for a couple reasons.

One, it’s located outside of NYC in Chappaqua. I know a lot of the camps listed are located in NYC. Basketball is huge in the city.

Two, they offer several Celebrity Camps for players like David Lee, J.R. Smith, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Mason Plumee. Great opportunity to meet a pro player!

Plus, Teaches Hoops offer After-School Camps, Spring Break Camps, and President’s Week Camps. Training that fits into everyone’s schedule!

I know the last camp is going to be very popular. I get a lot of questions about basketball camp scholarships. 

Well, Above The Rim doesn’t provide camp scholarship, but does provide FREE basketball camps throughout greater NYC.

Camps Hosted By Colleges & Universities

Syracuse University and Jim Boehiem’s Basketball Camp is one of the most popular in New York.

There’s a couple different camp sessions to choose from. It looks like a fairly traditional college  bball camp including stations and games.

Something cool about the Big Orange BBall Camp is that campers receive a workout booklet with drills and exercises. These will be great to work on at home.

15 years later I still have the drills I received from Billy Donavan at the University of Florida camp!

St. Bonaventure University “Bonnies” has a long history offering basketball camps. The Men’s coach has been doing it for 9 years, Women’s coach 15 years!

Overall, both camps for boys and girls look like well-run camps. Campers at the Men’s camp will get individual workouts and motivational thought provided to each camper.

Bonnies Women Basketball also offer a “Day in the Life” camp.

This bball camp is for aspiring high school players who want to know what it’s like to practice for a Division 1 team. Campers also get presentations on what it’s like to be a student-athlete.

Cornell Sports School in Ithaca offer the same type of camps for both boys and girls.

Choose from the classic Day Camp and a Prospect Camp. Both camps are hosted by the basketball head coaches.

The Prospect camp is for high school players who have ambitions to play in college. The camp will resemble a Cornell practice.

It’s also a great opportunity for players to compete against other successful high school players.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget about the smaller colleges, they can provide quality camps too.

For example, University of Rochester has fundamental basketball camps for both boys and girls. They also offer Elite camps with advanced training for high school players.

Most of the smaller colleges use Elite camps to recruit for roster spots. If your son or daughter has ambitions to play in college, attending these Elite camps are a must!
