Intensive Basketball Camp
“The goal is to make practice more difficult, physically and mentally, than anything you’ll face in a game.” – Bobby Knight
This quote perfectly sums up what Intensive Basketball Camp is all about.
For 38 years, J Robinson Intensive Camps, including Basketball Intensive Camps have trained over 35,000 athletes with a unique training philosophy.
The philosophy focuses on both Physical and Mental Preparation. Potentially life-changing stuff here.
I say life-changing because because this camp goes beyond basketball skills. It teaches campers how to work hard in life.
Parents – we’re talking about Life Skills.
In addition to basketball skills, campers will be taught the J7 Training Philosophy. This includes Discipline, Dedication, Sacrifice, Accountability, Hard Work, Responsibility, Accountability, and Service.
All values we want our kids to emulate.
Think this is all talk and no results? Let’s look at the Michigan State University study that proves Intensive Camp Training improves the development of campers.
The Institute for the Study of Youth Sports at MSU
I’ll keep this short and not get too nerdy here.
In 2012 and 2013, J Robinson Intensive Camps partnered up with Michigan State University to study the effectiveness of their camp on athletes 9 months after camp.
The Institute for the Study of Youth Sports found that campers demonstrated significant development both immediately and long-term in the following areas:
- Goal Setting
- Peaking Under Pressure
- Coping With Adversity
- Achievement, Motivation and Confidence
If you want to geek out, here is a link to read the full study.
You may notice the study was for an Intensive Wrestling Camp. I don’t think it matters what kind of camp the study was for.
All the improvement areas, things like Goals and Concentration, can be learned in any sport. The important part is that they are actually taught!
The sport’s skills may change, but the principles stay the same.
Who is J Robinson?
Founder of the Intensive Camps, J Robinson is a former Army Airborne Ranger. Through his experience in the military he built the fundamentals of camp from the protocol of Army Ranger School.
J Robinson even incorporates camp awards similar to the Army Ranger School. In each Army Ranger class there is a “Distinguished Honor Graduate”.
Intensive Camps give out “The Black Hat” award to the camper who best emulates the characteristics of the J7.
Here’s last year’s Black Hat Award winner:
What Separates Intensive From Other Camps?
Let’s talk some basketball training.
Here’s several aspects of the camp that I believe separate the Intensive Camp from the competition:
Chalk Talk – Players will go through a basketball strategy session every night. Topics such as, recognizing weakness of opponents, motivation, leadership, and nutrition will be discussed.
Game Strategy – Advanced strategy such as how to protect the ball against an aggressive defense and creating space on the floor will be taught.
Conditioning – Physical and Mental Preparation to power through adversity on the court.
Non-Basketball Related, here’s what I believe separates them from other camps:
Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) – Will be working with campers.
22-Page Study – I haven’t heard of another camp having an official university study confirming the effectiveness of the camp!
Intensive Basketball Camp Swag
Camp swag is all the stuff a camper receiver when signing up for camp:
- Room & Board
- Full-time athletic training staff
- 3 meals a day
- A Basketball
- Reversible practice jersey
- Water bottle
- Camp curriculum and workbook
I love the idea of a Camp Workbook. This ensures the teaching won’t end at camp. Your son can go back over the things he learned for years to come.
I also recommend your camper take notes of things they learned before they go to sleep. The notes ensure camp lessons aren’t forgotten!
I know you love discounts. Here’s a few that Intensive Camps offer:
- Bringing a group of 4+
- Bringing a sibling
- Signing up before April 15th
- Military (immediate family member is active duty or veteran)
If any of these apply to you, don’t drop the ball and miss out on these discounts!
Intensive Camp Wrap-Up
Overall, the Intensive Basketball Camp builds tough and gritty athletes that will help the campers overcome not only obstacles on the court, but also in life.
I like any camp that promotes more than just basketball skills on the court. I believe the Intensive Basketball Camps does this through their J7 principles.
If you believe your son can handle the hard work, I highly recommend sending them to the Intensive Basketball Camp!
